|Benefits of Installing Soffit | How to Install Soffit | Installing Soffit|
The area where the roof overhangs the outside wall of your home needs to have some sort of soffit installed to keep bugs, birds and small animals out. It also provides a means to ventilate your attic. Without proper attic ventilation many problems can arise such mold, rot, decreased roof longevity and a decrease in the efficiency of the insulation of instalkled on the ceiling. Installing soffits will solve all these problems and keep your home free of common roof / attic troubles associated.
|Soffit comes in 12 foot long panels. The length of a soffit panel is installed from the house wall outward towards the roof eave. The soffit panel is cut to length. Roof eaves can over hang a exterior wall anywhere from a couple inches to several feet.
Before installing soffit, a J-channel or F-channel is installed in the exterior wall. The channel is installed in a position which is level with the roof eaves edge. Soffit panels fit loosely into the channels. The J or F type channels serve two purposes. J-channel holds the end of soffit panels and also cover up the cut edge of a soffit panel.
Once the soffit panel is cut to the desired length to match the roof eave it is slipped into the J or F - channel and nailed into place at the roof eaves end. Most commonly the nails are installed in the valley's of each soffit panel. Subsequent soffit panels are cut to fit and mated with the previously installed soffit panel. The sides of the soffit has a unique groove which allows addtitional panels to be snapped together. In other words the soffit is cut to length then mated at the sides to complete a roof eaves edge. The final step to hide the eaves end of the soffit panel is to install a fascia panel. Fascia panels serve two purposes. One, to complete a soffit installation and two, to cover and protect the roof eave lumber material from wood rot due to exposure to weather.
Once your soffit installation is complete the house will be well protected from the elements and also provide increased re-sale value and piece of mind. I've assembeled some other pages to help show you how to cut soffit and fascia panels using a cutting jig as well as some soffit and fascia pictures to hopefully help with home soffit remodeling projects.
